
How to Design an Ergonomic and Organized Toolshed or Workshop
Most workshop makeovers are doomed to failure before the first cabinet is mounted to the wall. That’s because most people buy storage first – and then try to fit their workflow around it. Adopted from kitchen design, the golden triangle concept works well in workshop layouts. Basically, you determine the three areas you’re likely to use most: for a workshop, that typically means the main workbench, the power tools you anticipate using most frequently, and the spot where you’ve planned to locate your central storage for easy access. Next, place these three areas in a rough triangle (it doesn’t have to be perfect, just in a position where you’re only a few steps away from each spot) and voila, you have an efficient workspace.

Workbench Height Is Not A Preference, It’s A Spec
Using a workbench that’s too low or too high for the task at hand is an injury waiting to happen. For work while on your feet, the standard range will work well (36-38 inches high). For precision work, the sit-at bench should be more like desk level. You’ll need a good adjustable stool to go with it, one that gives good lumbar support. To use the bench properly, you’ll want your hips and knees to form a 90-degree angle, not quite possible if you’re sitting on a barstool.
